Framing Begins!

We got our first delivery of wood, yesterday. A LOT of wood. Two trucks full. About 6000 pounds worth. Here's the first truck:

"How do they get all that wood off the truck?" you may ask. How, indeed. Well, they don't have any fancy schmancy tools. Sam thought it was pretty amazing how they did it: basically the guy driving the truck backs up at high speed, then slams on his brakes, causing the load to move back a couple of inches each time. Then, he revs the engine and moves forward very quickly, leaving the load of wood behind, so that -slam!- it falls onto the delivery surface.

The thing is, our delivery surface was green concrete, and we wanted to protect it from cracking. So Sam and Dan built up a wall of wood at the edge of (and slightly higher than) the slab, so that that wall would receive most of the impact.

Then the guy driving the truck did his backing up thing... (shown here with the second load of wood, because it was the better video. This is the last of several back ups, as you can see from where the wood is positioned at the beginning of the video)

And then he did his driving forward thing for the slam effect. (First load again, here... and ignore the colorful lanugage! It's not necessarily a PG blog!)

So then we had wood!

Before they could start using it, though, Sam and Dan had to remove our little bedroom windows...

... and the window from the bathroom...

... they had to get rid of the remaining drywall (somewhere in that mess is Dan!)...

... and fill the existing framing with insulation.

Then they had to mark off where the studs were, so that they could nail into them later, and finally they got to put up the first piece of plywood!

They made sure that it was perfectly level...

...snapped chalk lines so they'd know where the underlying studs were...

... and then nailed it up! Sam has a new toy- a nail gun that runs on butane. It uses special nails that come in 'cartridges':

Sam is quite pleased with his new toy- I mean tool...

...but still shared it with Dan:

By the end of the day there were three boards of plywood up, over meticulously placed and stapled insulation.

Who knows what will have happened when I get home today! Stay tuned...
